After a good breakfast, we headed out with the sun shining down on us, but the wind had died. I was so looking forward to pushing out with a strong tail wind.
Stops along the Way
Two Village Idiots Caphe
Riding along the prairie highways, there is a lot of the same stuff along the way. Lots of open fields. Lots of minor hills. Lots of straight roads. And a lot of open spaces between break areas. So when we happened upon the gas station in Tompkins, SK and it was about noon, we had to stop to get some lunch. Luckily there was a cafe, or should I say a caphe, attached to the gas station.
The place was called Two Village Idiots Caphe, We went in and had a great lunch. The Village Idiots were in full force. When I asked about the name of the place, the response was what else would you call two people who open a cafe in a town that didn’t have a grocery or even a convenience store? The folks who own the place love to laugh at the whole name and how they ended up there.
A great place to stop on the long drive through Saskatchewan if you are looking for something to eat (they say they have amazing cinnamon buns, but they were all sold out — must be good!

Just as we were getting ready to leave, a couple of ladies rolled in on their bikes. Barb and Shirley had left Vancouver about the same time as we had and were heading east. Barb as far as Winnipeg, while Shirley is planning to continue on to St. John’s, NL. We sat and shared stories with them for an hour or so before it was time to get rolling again. Funny Shirley had almost the same setup as Ernie – same Ortlieb panniers, even the same yellow MEC dry bag.

We rolled into Gull Lake and set up in the Municipal Campground. Quite a nice spot and at $25 and free showers, a good deal. Then took a walk into town to get some groceries and some cold beer. Guess who we bumped into – Barb and Shirley. They had opted for the local hotel rather than camping. The bugs were biting too hard!
