On today’s ride I was on my own.
After the extra day in Canmore, I didn’t really need too much of a recovery day. That being said, I was early to bed last night, then I didn’t get out of bed until 6:30 AM. A sleep in – of sorts. .
Today is a day to try and reconnect to lost contacts resulting from my computer meltdown. Actually, I was pretty successful, having tracked down several folks whose info was lost in the meltdown.
The Stop – The Military Museum
I had been looking forward to this visit for quite a while. I had been told that the exhibits were pretty special. So Ian Harding, my host in Calgary, and I rode out to the Museum. Luckily, the rain had stopped, but the wind had not. It was a strong headwind almost all of the way there.
We arrived just in time to meet up with Brad Field, President and CEO of Homes for Heroes Foundation (H4HF). The H4HF’s Veterans’ Village Program objective is to furnish supportive housing within a dedicated “Veterans’ Village” community while also providing residents with comprehensive, customized programming. We had a great chat about their program, as well as The Road to Valour.
The Museum covers all branches of the Canadian Armed Forces, but my real focus today was to honour the Victoria Cross winners who are represented in the regimental museums of:
- The Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI);
- Sergeant George Mullin, VC, MM
- Sergeant Robert Spall, VC
- The Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians);
- Lieutenant Frederick Maurice Watson Harvey, VC, CBE, MC, Croix de Guerre
- Sergeant Arthur Herbert Lindsay Richardson, VC
- Lieutenant Gordon Muriel Flowerdew, VC
- The King’s Own Calgary Regiment;
- Private John George Pattison, VC
- The Calgary Highlanders
- Harry Brown, VC
- Arthur George Knight, VC
We also toured around the naval and air force displays, before heading back to Ian and Kim’s for a pizza dinner. Tomorrow back on the road to Okotoks – and hopefully sun and no wind.
