June 7 – snow! Not something that I had factored into the planning for this project, but there you have it. On the ground!

Yes, Lake Louise was supposed to be the end destination for today, but given the weather and the snow climbing out of Field, we decided that discretion was the better part of The Road To Valour.

From Field, there was almost 450 m of climbing in the snow. I know that I’m getting repetitive, but I’m still struggling to believe it! Ironically, once we arrived at the higher elevation of Lake Louise, it had stopped snowing or raining, and there was no snow on the ground.

Stopped at the Lake Louise village for a cinnamon bun and a coffee to dry out and warm up. Then back on the road to Banff via the Bow Valley Parkway. It was a rolling road with very few climbs of any significance. And better still, much of the road between Lake Louise and Banff was closed to cars — we had it to ourselves. Well, almost. There were other cyclists and a black bear that decided to cross the road and chow down on some salad.

Our completion of the Kicking Horse Pass at an elevation of 1,647 m also marked the last of the major mountain passes. That’s reason to celebrate.
