Sitrep Update 2

I’m still struggling with my computer and so I’m really far behind in my sitreps. Hopefully, when I get home on Thursday I will be able to correct that.

Today, Day 6 of The Road To Valour was our hardest yet. But first, let’s catch up on Days 4 and 5.

Day 4 – Hope to Sunshine Valley

On Day 4 we got beyond Hope (take that any way you want). It was our first day of serious climbing on our way to Sunshine Valley.

The weather is finally changing from a hot early summer day with good tailwinds to cloudy with the threat of rain.

Our stop along the way was at the Hope slide. this was the January 9, 1965 mountain rock slide that buried Hwy 3 in 70 m of rock and gravel.

Distance for the day was just 22.4 km, but the elevation gain was 732 m.

Day 5 – To Manning Park

Along the way, we summitted Allison Pass at 1,342 m elevation. This was the first major mountain pass for the tour.

Distance for the day was just 46.7 km, but the elevation gain was 828 m.

Day 6

The promise of rain from the previous day turned into a reality overnight. We had some fairly heavy rain throughout the night and when we woke up, everything was soaked. After packing up, we headed to the Manning Park Lodge for breakfast and to wait for the rain to stop. We didn’t get on the road until about 10:30.

This day was a combination of steep uphill, steep downhill hairpin turns and of course, more rain. We pulled into Princeton looking for something to eat. We found this great sandwich place called Thomasina’s — highly recommended.

After lunch, we continued our ride to Lorie Dodd’s beautiful log home at the top of a very steep and muddy hill (13.8% grade)

Distance for the day was just 80.6 km, but the elevation gain was 1,008 m. This was the toughest day so far.

Next Update on Friday.
