I Found it – My Theme Song

A few days ago, I was streaming some music when something new stopped me in my tracks. It wasn’t just catchy—it felt like the message behind The Road To Valour. I had to know what it was. A quick check revealed it was a fairly new song by Glass Tiger.

I’ve been a fan of theirs for years—they’re almost as old as I am—but this tune was different. It had a hint of maritime folk, but what really hit me was its unwavering message about the strength and resilience of the Canadian spirit. It spoke to “heroes of times come and gone.”

It inspired me!

For those who might not know, Glass Tiger is one of Canada’s iconic rock bands, best known for their 1980s hits like Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone) and Someday. Over the years, they’ve evolved while staying true to their Canadian roots—blending heartfelt lyrics with melodies that feel like home – and this one really feels like home!

I knew right then—I wanted this song as the theme for The Road To Valour.

So, I did a bit of digging and learned that Glass Tiger has a strong connection to the Canadian military—they’d even travelled to Afghanistan twice to perform for the troops. That sealed it. That night, I sent an email to the band, or at least to whoever answers their “Contact Us” messages. Honestly, I figured it was a long shot that I’d ever hear back—or that I could afford the rights if I did.

The next morning, I got a phone call from their manager. He’d read my email, was moved by the project, and had already spoken with Alan Frew, the band’s lead singer and songwriter. After a couple of quick questions about how I planned to use the song, his reply was simple: “Okay.”

I could use it—free of charge—as long as I didn’t personally profit from it.

Wow. Just… wow.

Moments like that remind me what The Road To Valour is all about—community, compassion, and the power of Canadians coming together for something bigger than ourselves. Whether it’s a legendary band lending their voice or someone cheering from the roadside, it all speaks to that same spirit of courage, kindness, and connection that drives this ride across our country.

So here are the lyrics –

Canada’s Song (Free to Be)

Song by Glass Tiger ‧ 2025

From the Isle of Vancouver to the Labrador Sea
One nation that lives strong and free
Where I’m free to be me
From the songs of the prairies to the call of the ponds
Heroes of times come and gone
But the memories go on and on and on

Oh, this is Canada’s song
Oh, where my heart belongs

Where you’re free to be a dreamer
Free to be who you are
Free to believe in your star
Free to go far

Oh, this is Canada’s song
Oh, where my heart belongs
Oh, where we’re free to be
Oh, we’re strong and free
Free to be

Oh, free to be a dreamer
Free to be who you are (ooh)

Oh, this is Canada’s song
Oh, where my heart belongs
Oh, we’re free to be
Oh, you’re strong and free

Oh, this is Canada’s song
Oh, where I’m free to be
Strong and free
